The concert will feature 50 of New York City’s finest musicians and violinist Stephanie Chase. Scandia’s Music Director, Dorrit Matson will lead the orchestra in an exciting program titled ”The Danish Golden Age” and celebrating Danish composer Niels W. Gade in the 200th anniversary year of his birth in 1817. The performance will feature three of Niels W. Gade’s most remarkable compositions: Echoes of Ossian-Overture, Symphony No. 2 and Violin Concerto Opus 56.
New York Scandia Symphony has served the communitues of New York City with innovative and creative programs of Scandinavian music for the past 28 years, sharing the musical treasures and cultural heritage of Scandinavia with American audiences.
The year 2017 brings an excellent opportunity to inform and enlighten audiences abroad about The Danish Golden Age, a period of exceptional creative production in Denmark during the first half of the 19th century. Danes from all branches of the arts and sciences were involved in a new era of Romantic nationalism, later known as ”The Danish Golden Age”, inspired by German Romanticism. Danish music, paintings, architecture and litterature florished in this era which became known as the richest in Danish cultural history and had a profound effect on not only life in Denmark but, with time, on the international front too.
