Join us as American Scandinavian Society 2019 cultural grant winner, Tony“Rubin” Sjöman opens his studio to us for an intimate Q&A and a walking tour of New York City mural locations of his work.
About the Artist:
Manhattan-based mural and studio artist Tony “Rubin” Sjöman has roots in Finland and Sweden. He draws inspiration from his Scandinavian heritage for his complex abstract geometrical murals and studio works. Sjöman has become a staple of the art scene of New York City and beyond. His murals can be seen in a wide variety of spots in and around the city: on churches, in hotels and high-end boutiques, in luxury high-rises throughout Manhattan and on the 69th floor of WTC 4. Sjöman’s studio works have been on display at Scope New York, Scope Miami and Art Miami during Art Basel, as well as in galleries throughout New York City, Miami and Los Angeles.
The artist has worked with several leading US real estate developers, who have been looking to enhance the commercial appeal of new developments through art. Sjöman painted the largest mural to date right next to the capitol in Washington DC for Related Company’s luxury high rise development and he is currently working with an array of real estate developers. Architects and designers in New York City.
Sjöman is also the subject of the art book “Rubin: New York / Scandinavia” a much talked about and comprehensive coffee table book featuring the artist’s work.
Details of the Tour:
Our tour will begin at 12PM gathering outside the studio building at 167 Madison Ave for an intimate look into Rubin’s process and gallery work. We will proceed to view works at several locations in the area. The tour will end back at the artist’s studio with an open invitation to gather for drinks at a local bar.
