SUMMARY:SCANDINAVIAN ARTISTS STUDIO VISITS
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday November 16th to visit the studios of Danish\, Norwegian & Swedish artists & curators at ISCP in Brooklyn.\nThe International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) Fall Open Studios is a presentation of international contemporary art by the 35 artists and curators from 26 countries currently in residence. We will meet with visiting Scandinavian artists & curators in their studios- Lotte Nielsen (Denmark)\, Katrine Elise Agpalza Pedersen (Philippines/Norway)\, Tora Schultz (Sweden/Denmark)\, Jens Settergren (Denmark)\, and Sara Sjölin (Sweden/Switzerland/Denmark). Swedish Sophie Tottie’s work will also be included in ISCP’s 30th anniversary exhibition. In addition we can visit other artists from a total of 26 countries\, currently in residence. \nDetails\n* Saturday\, November 16th\, 2024  |  2:00-5:00pm. Meet at the entrance at 2:00pm. \n* Tickets: Event is free for members of the American Scandinavian Society. Please RSVP below in order to attend. \n* Address: 1040 Metropolitan Avenue\, Brooklyn\, NY 11211 \n  \n\n\nAbout the ISCP Fall Open Studios\nThree times a year\, ISCP offers audiences access to private artists’ and curators’ studios to view artwork and curatorial projects and share one-on-one conversations. This fall\, ISCP invites the public to engage in dialogue around contemporary art with arts professionals from across the globe. Concentrated in a three-story postindustrial loft building on the edge of Bushwick\, ISCP supports the creative advancement of residents with individual workspaces\, a robust program of events\, and professional benefits. \nSomewhere Inside: ISCP and the Studio\, an exhibition commemorating ISCP’s thirtieth anniversary\, will be on view in the second floor gallery. Somewhere Inside looks at the ways that five artists—Martine Gutierrez\, Daniel Guzmán\, Joiri Minaya\, Sophie Tottie\, and Frank WANG Yefeng\, all ISCP alumni\, find inspiration from the studio. While these artists have distinct practices\, they all approach the studio as a nourishing and exploratory space where they can develop and mine their own creative archive—one enriched by a porous connection to the outside world. Taking up themes of transformation and metamorphosis\, topics closely tied to artistic production itself\, the work presented here reveals different strategies for making use of one’s expanding archive. \nIn addition\, Sujin Lim: The Land\, Dark and Muddy\, an exhibition that memorializes a lost landscape\, will be on view in the first floor project space. Transforming the gallery into an immersive installation\, Ground Floor Resident Sujin Lim offers a poetic tribute to South Korea’s Yeongheung Island\, where her father grew up—a place drastically impacted by a recent surge in industrial and commercial development and changing tidelines\, markers of climate change that have become increasingly common around the world today. Playfully alluding to the landscape painting tradition\, Lim’s compositions poignantly capture a seaside that now only exists in memory. \nThe exhibitions are curated by Melinda Lang\, Director of Programs and Exhibitions at ISCP. \nOpen Studios participating artists and curators: \nAmy Bravo (United States); Paloma Contreras Lomas (Mexico); S Emsaki (Iran/United States); Bryan Fernandez (United States/Dominican Republic); Anaïs Goupy (Germany/France); Antonietta Grassi (Canada); Efrat Hakimi (United States); Ruthi Helbitz Cohen (Israel); Hong Seon Jang (South Korea/United States); Dora Jeridi (France); Bob Kil (United Kingdom/Germany); Ulrike Königshofer (Austria); Karel Koplimets (Estonia); Sujin Lim (United States/South Korea); Simon Liu (Hong Kong/United States); Irina Lotarevich (Austria); Brenda Mallory (United States); Azita Moradkhani (Iran/United States); Lotte Nielsen (Denmark); Nifemi Ogunro (United States); Katrine Elise Agpalza Pedersen (Philippines/Norway); Tamen Pérez (Costa Rica/United States); Antonis Pittas (Greece/The Netherlands); Tom Polo (Australia); Fouz Saif (Qatar); Tora Schultz (Sweden/Denmark); Jens Settergren (Denmark); Sonia Shiel (Ireland); Sara Sjölin (Sweden/Switzerland/Denmark); Kara Springer (Canada/Barbados); Frank WANG Yefeng (United States/China); Apichaya Wanthiang (Thailand/Belgium/Norway); Stanley Wany (Canada); Sasha Wortzel (United States); and Sarah Zapata (United States)

SUMMARY:“in the wild rush of spring”: Candace Jensen\, Elisa Jensen and Lisa Saeboe
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View February 5-28\, 2025\nOpening Reception on Thursday\, February 13th from 5-8 PM\nVisiting hours Wed-Sat from 12-4 and Sun from 11-2 \nTrygve Lie Gallery\, 317 E 52nd St\, NY\, NY \nPresented by the American Scandinavian Society \nCurated by Audra Verona Lambert \n  \n“in the wild rush of spring” – an exhibition meditating on women\, the natural world and the intrinsic links between them – features works on paper\, painting and mixed-media works by artists Candace Jensen (Danish-American)\, Elisa Jensen (Danish-American)\, and Lisa Saeboe (Norwegian-American). Presented by the American Scandinavian Society and curated by Audra Verona Lambert\, the exhibit is on view at Trygve Lie Gallery from Feb 5-28\, 2025. \n  \n“in the wild rush of spring” is inspired by the Norwegian poet and cultural icon Hulda Garborg\, who was an early Norwegian Feminist\, writer and patron of the arts. She served as one of the country’s first ever Norwegian woman politicians. Lines from her poem “April” (from the publication\, “Symra: den Blomen du Elsa”) consider the feelings inspired by the majesty of nature and the changing of the seasons\, with an excerpt from the poem forming the exhibition’s title. “Women have always been inspired by – and exerted an impact on– the natural world\, in ways reflected deftly by Garborg as much as by the artists included in the exhibition\,” reflects Verona Lambert. “Myth tells the truth: where the historical canon may exclude women for centuries\, divine figures such as Idun\, Skadi and Freya – prominent goddesses in Norse Mythology – hold great power and significant roles in the natural world.\, reflecting enduring roles that women play in engaging with\, protecting and stewarding contemporary environmental concerns at the global level\, from Greta Thunberg and beyond.” \nWorks on view from Candace Jensen’s “Gaia Illuminations” and “New Scriptures” series honor the enduring presence of the natural world\, “expand[ing] calligraphic illumination’s traditional cultural reliquary beyond that of anthropocentrism\,” Jensen observes. Utilizing natural materials spanning from hand-made inks\, gold leaf and other media\, Jensen honors the significant depth of the canon of Deep Ecology with her transcendental and meditative works. Artist Elisa Jensen’s introspective paintings from her “Girls” series features young women writing in the sand along the seashore\, touching the surface of water or otherwise communing with the environment. These moments feel unstructured and feature natural interactions between these girls and nature\, transforming individual\, personal experiences into universal ones. These moments reinforce the artist’s views on how art communicates.“Each artist brings the viewer into [their] own private world\,” Jensen notes\, “or renews our sense of what it means to be a human being.”[1] Lisa Saeboe is a multi-disciplinary artist whose works on paper\, paintings and new media work present a holistic vision of Feminine power and its intrinsic associations with nature\, with an emphasis on “our divine connection [with].. ecology.” Saeboe’s work frames transformation and self-realization as naturally organic processes directly linked with our presence in and of the natural world. \n“in the wild rush of spring” remains on view at Trygve Lie Gallery\, 317 E 52nd street at the Norwegian Seamen’s Church from February 5-28\, 2025. Curator and artists will be present for a reception during the College Art Association Conference on Thursday\, Feb 13 from 5-8 PM at the gallery. The exhibition honors the cultural impact women have exerted across Scandinavian arts and literature. “in the wild rush of spring” foregrounds women’s agency and ability to form an affinity with the natural world\, free from intervention or societal restrictions. \n[1]Rome Art Program. “Interview with Elisa Jensen.” Rome Art Program\, Whatever It Takes. She wrote over  forty books\, both in Nynorsk and in Bokmål (the two written standard Norwegian languages) paving the way for women in theater and literature in Norway\, as well as politics — she was an early local politician in the 19th century. She co-founded the inimitable Det Norske Teatret\, serving as its first board manager. A woman ahead of her time\, the unbridled spirit of Hulda’s writings finds expression in the artworks comprising “in the wild rush of spring” – informed by a stanza from her poem\, “April.”

SUMMARY:Nils Bruun: An Engineer's Eye for the Abstract
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition:\nAn Engineer’s Eye for the Abstract\nFolded Paper & Metal Sculptures\nby Danish-American Artist\, Nils Bruun\nThe exhibition features folded paper sculpture\, metal sculpture and photography by Nils Bruun (1938-2023). Nils was a Danish-American engineer with a love of flight and a sculptor’s eye. His captivating abstract origami is on display; some pieces are for sale. The exhibit\, curated by Margret M. Ditolla\, will run concurrent with the Harriet Nilsen Winter Concert and the 2025 Cultural Grant Ceremony on February 12th\, followed by hors d’oeuvres and wine reception and closing of the Nils Bruun Art Exhibit. \nExhibition on View January 29 – February 13\, 2026\nOpening Reception: January 29 – 5:30-8:30pm  |  Closing Reception: February 12 – 6:00-9:00pm\n\n \n \n \n \n Detail of paper sculpture by Nils Bruun \n \n \n \n \n \n Detail of paper sculpture by Nils Bruun \n \n \n\nExhibition Viewing Hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday from 12:00-4:00pm\, Sundays from 12:00-2:00pm \nLocation:\nKing Olav V’s Norwegian Church and Cultural Center – Trygve Lie Gallery\n317 East 52 Street\, NYC (between First & Second Avenues) \n\nNils Bruun\nDanish-American\, 1938-2023\nNils was an interesting\, unassuming and intensely curious man of many talents. A consistent thread throughout his childhood was flight … things\, people\, animals – anything that could fly\, starting with Dumbo when he was three. Then it was birds\, seagulls and most especially raptors…like eagles\, osprey\, even vultures. Wings that could flap and fold intrigued him\, led him into mechanical engineering\, airplane design and eventually into folded metal sculpture and paper folding\, i.e.\, origami. One of his proudest accomplishments was participation on the team that developed a lunar roving vehicle at Grumman Aerospace Corporation. \nWith credentials from Rensselaer and Yale\, he worked at places like Grumman\, IBM and Rhode Island School of Design\, and also at The Art Barge one summer in Napeague. Nils’ origami caught the attention of East Hampton and Sag Harbor gallerists at Crazy Monkey\, Pamela Williams\, Chase Edwards and Julie Keyes who showed and sold his large\, small elegant abstract origami pieces over the years. \nWe are pleased and honored to present Nils’ artwork here at Trygve Lie Gallery in Manhattan\, New York.
