Yet\, this sociopolitical and economic tumult also gave rise to a vibrant cultural and philosophical environment for nineteenth-century Danish artists. Beyond the Light places the drawings\, oil sketches\, and paintings created by these artists firmly in this period\, one that witnessed the transformation of a once-powerful Denmark into a small\, somewhat marginalized country at the edge of Europe. Danish artists forged a close-knit community during this time\, and the artworks they created explore notions of place\, identity and belonging\, and what it means to travel and return home.” (Metmuseum.org – for more information about the exhibition please click here) \nHolland Cutter of the New York Times  calls the show “luminous” and “crystalline\,” noting “from the moment you enter the galleries holding some 90 paintings\, oil sketches and notebook-size drawings of breath-on-glass translucency\, you’re in for an experience of slow-down\, move-close looking and thinking.”  \nYou can read his review here. \nPlease join us for this rare opportunity to walk the exhibition one of its’ last days in New York guided by two of the show’s curators Dr. Freyda Spira – formerly of the Metropolitan Museum\,  now the Robert L. Solley Curator of Prints and Drawings at Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven\, Connecticut\, and Dr. Stephanie Schrader\, a curator in the Department of Drawings at the Getty Museum Los Angeles.  \n\nMembers who join us for the guided tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art are also invited to join us for a concert\, two days before at Alice Tully Hall!\nNew York Scandia Symphony’s\, “Under Northern Lights” Concert on April 13th at 8PM\n \n“New York Scandia Symphony (Scandia) will present a program of seldom heard Scandinavian masterpieces\, including Helios Overture and An Imaginary Journey to the Faroe Islands by Carl Nielsen\, Concertino for two Horns and Orchestra by Friedrich Kuhlau\, At the Castle Gate and Karelia Suite by Jean Sibelius and Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 – Midsommarvaka by Hugo Alfvén.
