CLOSING RECEPTION: March 20th, 4:00 – 6:00 pm
NEW YORK, [January 28, 2016]—The American Scandinavian Society presents the debut Manhattan solo exhibition of the paintings of Kamilla Talbot, “My Scandinavia,” at the Trygve Lie Gallery, open February 4 – March 20, 2016. The show includes 18 works on paper and seven oil paintings done en plein air or in the studio, based on the artist’s travels in Scandinavia and her personal connection to Denmark. Central to the show are works made during a five-day sailing trip in in 2015 on the Danish boat Rylen—the same boat that Talbot’s great-grandfather, well-known nature painter Johannes Larsen, sailed on in the 1920s.
Few other contemporary artists can lay claim to such a correspondence over the generations. And Talbot’s Rylen paintings, not depictions of the boat from a distance but works made right on deck in the midst of the sounds and sensations of the sea, are vibrantly immediate in their effect.
In an essay accompanying the show, Valerie Cornell writes, “ ‘My Scandinavia’ is the felicitous title Kamilla Talbot has given to this show of new paintings (including scenes of Icelandic rocks and Norwegian skerries); it refers to her own artistic perspective on the region as well as the fact that what she’s seen, felt and painted is freshly of the moment: it is her Denmark, her Kattegat, her Mariager Fjord, and not that of her great-grandparents—though of course it is theirs, too, layered in and blowing through the spaces in her work.”
Kamilla Talbot studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the New York Studio School. She currently teaches at the National Academy School in New York, and has taught at the New York Studio School and the Art Students League. Her paintings have been shown at numerous galleries in New York, and she has had solo shows at the Charles P. Sifton Gallery at the Eastern District Courthouse in Brooklyn, as well as at the Bruno Marina Gallery in Brooklyn and the Johannes Larsen Museum in Denmark. Residencies include the Heliker-LaHotan Residency in Maine, the Vermont Studio Center, the World Trade Center residency and residencies in Norway, Iceland and Newfoundland.
Please join Kamilla Talbot at the closing reception for “My Scandinavia” at the Trygve Lie Gallery on March 20, 2016, from 4–6 pm.
