Laura Splan is a New York City based artist working at the intersections of Science, Technology, and Culture. Her research-based studio practice and interdisciplinary collaborations culminate in multimedia exhibitions and events that cultivate intuitive comprehension of the interconnectedness of cultural and biological systems. She engages audiences with complexity through curiosity, wonder, and play. Recent projects have included immersive multisensory installations, networked devices, participatory sculptures, and intimately scaled objects. Splan’s internationally recognized work has been presented at The Nobel Prize Museum at Liljevalchs (Stockholm, SE), Jönköping County Museum (SE), SÍM (Reykjavík, IS), Museum of Modern Art (NYC), Brooklyn Museum (NYC), Musea Brugge (BE), Nantes Museum of Arts (FR), and Santa Mònica Art Centre (Barcelona, ES). Her work is represented in the collections of the Thoma Art Foundation and commissions include projects for the Museum of the Moving Image, Vanderbilt Planetarium, Beall Center for Art+Technology, and Bruges Triennial. Speaking engagements include talks and lectures for The National Arts Club (NYC) and Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (ES), Royal Institute of Art (Stockholm, SE) and the Norwegian Bioart Arena Symposium (Ås, NO). Publications featuring her artwork include “Life Eternal” published by The Nobel Prize Museum and “Crafting for a Better World” published by Jönköpings County Museum. Reviews and articles including her work have appeared in The New York Times, BOMB, and Frieze and she has been featured on NPR’s Science Friday. Her research has been supported by the Simons Foundation, Jerome Foundation, Creative Australia, Open Fung, and NEW INC at the New Museum.
