Reading of Hjalmar Bergman’s Jack the Clown
Hjalmar Bergman (1883 – 1931) was a Swedish dramatist, novelist and short-story writer who often focused on psychology and social analysis in his works. Bergman traveled extensively in Europe especially in Italy and went in 1923 also to Hollywood invited by Goldwyn Company (later MGM) to write film manuscripts. His novel Jack the Clown was his final work before he died prematurely. The story depicts the tragic fate of the artist in the modern world and is thought of by many as a satire of the American Entertainment industry.
